There’s a special lingo in filmmakers newcomers to the craft might not quite get during their first days on set. More than barking “do this” and “do that,” there’s a specific way directors say their commands so that it’s clearly understood by all stagehands in a standardized manner. Take a seat in the director’s chair and practice these basic terms to sounds like pro.“Standby” “Get ready” in layman’s terms. This means you have only a few sections before a predetermined action is set to begin.“Ready” The last warning before a camera, crew or actor is finally called on to take action moments later.“Push” A guide to cameramen to zoom in towards a spot or person.“Pull” A guide to cameramen to zoom out away from a spot or person.“Pan” A guide to cameramen to move strictly along a left to right plane.“Tilt” A guide to cameramen to move strictly on an up and down plane“Hold” Stop the movement of an object or person.“Go” Action, begin a predetermined moment.“Roll” Push play on recording device or play back recorded material.
