Tutorial 5: Breeding of Two Parents with Multiple Selected Parents

This tutorial will show how to use the tool of Breeding of Two Parents with Multiple

Project Loading

Create a working directory:

Enter the software, hit File->Load Project ..., and bring up (1):

/usr/local/genshade/prman/examples/gs_01012000_01_sur_top_01.prj

The GUI looks like:

Getting Ready

modify the HSD (Hi Standard of Deviation) at the Frequently Used Generation Parameters Sliders to 40.
Select two parents with multiple from the Breeding Method Options at the tool bar.
Hit Setup->Main

At the Genetic Label Text Field, enter today's date and process number, for example:

01012000

set the Start Generation Index to 1
set the End Generation Index to 100
hit close

Generate

Hit Generation->Generate multiple
Go and have fun for several hours (2) or enjoy watching the generations as they progress. If you need to stop at any time, press the stop command at the tool bar

View and Save

Browse through all generations

save your new database

(1) Your sysadmin may have installed the software somewhere other than /usr/local. If so, look at your $GENSHADE_DIR variable, and use that instead of /usr/local/genshade in the above example.

(2) Each Generation in this tutorial took 3.3 minutes, on the average, on a SGI O2 workstation, 180 MHZ with 256 MB of RAM. The whole 100 generations took about 5.5 hours, generating about 2,600 new shaders to pick from.

(3) If you use automatic scoring, you may browse through the MGP main pool of the End Generation only. However it is always useful to browse through all generations and add wonderful shaders to your collection of shaders.
